Joe Biden is trying to sell his next, massive spending bill. He says it’s for “infrastructure” to convince Americans it will be for much-needed projects.
But it has become clear to many that Biden’s nearly $2 trillion deal is hardly about building and fixing roads, bridges, and buildings and more about giving liberals goodies they want paid for by taxpayers.
Of note, the current bill would give $250,000 to expand the Michelle Obama Library in California.
$1,750,000 to spruce up the Japanese Garden in Portland. $436,100 for a “meditation and restorative yoga” program in New Jersey. And $250,000 to expand the Michelle Obama Library in California.
These are just some of the controversial Community Funding Project requests filed by federal lawmakers as earmarks make a return in Congress.
Democrats and Republicans in Congress have asked for almost $6 billion in additional funding for local projects ahead of the upcoming federal budget.
The report continues:
Rep. Brad Schneider, D-Ill., wants $3.75 million to restore the Waukegan Carnegie Museum. According to his website, the money will go toward a “new community and event space, preserving the history of the community, offering cultural enrichment, and thereby supporting nearby local businesses.”
There are requests for $2 million in funding for a new art collection at the Brooklyn Museum in New York;
$2 million for a Pickleball and Fitness Circuit in Orange, Calif.;
$1.5 million to provide free public Wi-Fi in a California city and $250,000 for a performing arts center that, according to the website of Rep. Val Demings, D-Fla., “should be more than a beautifully designed building.”
There are dozens of projects that list diversity and equity among their goals, including $742,000 for a New York program that would feature “conversations around difficult issues such as racism, gender discrimination, and cultural bias” and $166,000 for the development of an equity program at Lincoln University.
How insane is that?
A bill that is supposed to improve our nation’s infrastructure somehow would give $1.7 million for a Japanese Garden in Portland and even a whopping $436,100 for a yoga program.
And, weirdest of all, a quarter of a million for Michelle Obama’s library in California.
Joe Biden has a lot of non-traditional “infrastructure” in his near $2 trillion infrastructure bill that he wants Congress to pass, but it is not going to be that simple.
In a Senate that is split 50-50 between Republicans and Democrats Biden cannot afford to lose even one Democrat vote.
The issue for him is that West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin is not as progressive as the majority of the Democrats in the Senate and does not appear set to vote for the new “infrastructure” Biden has proposed.
“What we think the greatest need we have now, that can be done in a bipartisan way, is conventional infrastructure whether it’s the water, sewer, roads, bridges, Internet — things that we know need to be repaired, be fixed,” the senator said.
“Why don’t you take the greatest need that we have and do it on something that we all agree on?” he said.
“The other things that are conceptional, we can work on piece by piece, committee by committee,” he said, noting that a bipartisan bill on “conventional” infrastructure would be “doable.”
