Catholic Archbishop Joseph Naumann criticized President Joe Biden again Tuesday, this time for forcing taxpayers to fund the purchases of aborted babies’ body parts for scientific research.
Naumann, who chairs the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ pro-life committee, has chastised the president repeatedly for his radical pro-abortion policies. Biden describes himself as a devout Catholic, but he openly defies church teachings about the sanctity of life.
Late last week, the Biden administration reversed actions by President Donald Trump to stop taxpayer funding to research using aborted baby body parts.
Responding Tuesday, Naumann said Biden’s latest action treats innocent unborn babies as commodities rather than valuable human beings, the Catholic Standard reports.
“The bodies of children killed by abortion deserve the same respect as that of any other person,” the Kansas City archbishop said. “Our government has no right to treat innocent abortion victims as a commodity that can be scavenged for body parts to be used in research.”

He said the action is doubly unethical because the government is not only promoting research using tissue from aborted babies but it also is forcing taxpayers to pay for it.
“It is unethical to promote and subsidize research that can lead to legitimizing the violence of abortion,” Naumann said. “It is also deeply offensive to millions of Americans for our tax dollars to be used for research that collaborates with an industry built on the taking of innocent lives.”
According to the report, the National Institutes of Health spends approximately $120 million a year on scientific research that uses aborted baby body parts.
Naumann and others have stressed that scientists do not need tissue from aborted babies to conduct research.
“Researchers have demonstrated that we can do effective scientific research and develop efficacious clinical treatments without harvesting tissue from aborted babies,” he continued.
The Trump administration took action to stop funding unethical research. In 2019, it cut off funding to an experiment that was creating “humanized mice” with tissue from aborted babies. The Trump administration also created a new ethical advisory board to review future funding requests from scientific researchers, and it established a $20 million grant to invest in ethical materials for scientific research.
However, the Biden administration disbanded the ethical advisory board last week and resumed support for research using aborted baby body parts.
It was just the latest of many pro-abortion actions by the Biden administration.
Previously, Naumann said Biden is creating “a real problem for the church” by advocating aggressively for the killing of unborn babies while calling himself a devout Catholic. Naumann said Biden’s pro-abortion actions are a “great evil” that “goes very much against fundamental Catholic moral teaching.”
Currently, Biden is pressuring Congress to pass the Equality Act, which would strip away conscience protections for pro-life medical workers and create a “right” to demand an abortion.
He also got rid of the Mexico City Policy and restored tens of millions of taxpayer dollars to the International Planned Parenthood Federation, which kills babies in abortions around the world and lobbies to legalize abortions in pro-life countries. Pro-life leaders warned that the money will be used to pressure countries in Africa and South America to legalize the killing of unborn babies in abortions.
