Overuse of Superlatives

Okay, folks, I have had it up to here *flat hand across neck* with the abuse of superlatives.

How many times have you heard people use “awesome,” “amazing” and “incredible” and words of that ilk to describe people, things and occurrences that are rather mundane and wholly credible?

I mean the Grand Canyon is amazing, a nuclear explosion is incredible, **God** is awesome.

But a teenager doing his homework on time two nights in a row is not awesome. The sauce you find on your pasta, however tasty, is not incredible. The finger painting your kid did in the fourth grade is not amazing.

We have desensitized the usage of these words so much that they do not mean *anything* any more. Just like giving everyone trophies.

We are so stupid. Isn’t that amazing?
